If we were to ask you what normal blood pressure is, you might answer 120/80.  Maybe you’re not even sure what that means exactly, but you know there is a normal value.  In healthcare, there are normal values for not just blood pressure, but many things like blood sugar, heart rate, bone density, body mass and eyesight (to name a few).  There will always be variations based on age, gender, ethnicity or a specific situation.  No one needs to be perfect, but there are accepted ranges.  Most of us are unaware there is also a normal when it comes to the structural alignment of the spine.

A structural dysfunction is any alignment abnormality or motion abnormality that causes your spine to shift from its normal structural alignment.  When the body, in particular the spine, is unbalanced, the result may be a variety of secondary conditions (symptoms) such as pain, numbness/tingling, headaches, sciatica, hernia’s – just to name a few.  Anything that adds stress to your body will subtract from your body’s ability to adapt to its environment, and may result in health challenges.

What type of Structural Dysfunction do you have?

Developmental

At birth, normal structures and systems require a sequence of movement challenges and opportunities to develop and function.  This can be monitored with developmental milestones. The body and brain have numerous periods of accelerated growth between infancy and adulthood which is not always linear.  As with other physical problems, early detection provides the best opportunity for appropriate correction.

Traumatic
Trauma can cause obvious structural dysfunctions. Pain can alter movement, but movement and structural dysfunctions might remain altered even after the pain is resolved. Compensation is a primitive survival behavior which allows us to temporarily move and function. However, these compensations are not our best long-term options and will themselves cause problems if not identified and corrected. Modern science offers many opportunities to artificially reduce or cover up pain (medications), allowing us to move into patterns and postures we would otherwise instinctively avoid. Absence of pain is not a sign of complete recovery.

Acquired Unnatural movements repeated on a functional movement base
The unnatural pattern and movement dysfunction occurs because of its repetitiveness. These movements could be part of daily activity, work posture and duties, hobbies or sport. Habitual activities often lead to overuse injuries, compensation, postural changes, musculoskeletal imbalances, and if left unchecked, symptoms such as pain and inflammation will arise.

Acquired Natural movements repeated on an dysfunctional movement base.
Many times, the activity gets the blame when the blame should be placed on the poor foundation that the activity was placed upon. It’s not the activity: it’s the Structural Dysfunction(s) giving rise to the problem. If left un-checked, symptoms such as pain and inflammation will develop and some people will break down.
